CPAC 2010 – A Conversation with Rachel Maddow

On day one of the CPAC conference for 2010, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow dropped by the JBS booth for a visit with William F. Jasper, senior editor for The New American magazine and John F. McManus, president of The John Birch Society.

In December, Maddow dedicated significant air time during two broadcasts of her MSNBC show to attacking The John Birch Society. This time, however, her visit to the JBS booth was cordial and friendly. In a six minute informal discussion, she talked with McManus and Jasper about differences of opinion amongst conservatives and about the JBS perspective on mass medication of the water supply, i.e., fluoridation.

Would you all please note the contrast between Ms Maddow’s polite and respectful interview with JBS officials, and the ambush tactics of Fox News’s Bill O’Reilly’s production assistants, who harangue their targets. This is an essential distinction to note when comparing the general intellectual honesty of the left with that of the reactionary right.

In this rancor-free exchange, I learned some things. My mind is not changed as such, but I’m better prepared to have a sincere discussion with Birchers on the beliefs we’re likely to disagree. Empathy for other points of view is not the same as weakness in support of one’s beliefs. Hard to believe this fact isn’t self-evident…

The JBS was again the topic of Rachel Maddow’s show tonight (2-19-10)and present were the usual tee, hee, hee’s from the host. Is Maddow trying to compete with Comedy Central? Does the follow up to this discussion with the JBS president and senior editor of The New American on her evening show fit more with the comedic style of The Colbert Report than with a serious “news” show?

Her visit with folks at the JBS booth had her making recommendations to Mr.McManus to prominently display Mr.McManus’ book William Buckley: Pied Piper For the Establishment so as to draw more interest from CPAC attendees. Funny how she didn’t include that in her hee, hee, hee follow up piece on her February 19th “news” show. It’s just poke fun and never address the facts. Colbert, you have nothing to worry about.

It pained me to hear Rachel use fluoridationists’ talking points. Iodine is an essential nutrient. Fluoride is not.

Love Rachel and her intense scrutiny of politics. Just wish she would do the same with fluoridation instead of just repeating what she memorized from her school days.

Modern science indicates that ingesting fluoride does not reduce tooth decay; but does expose the entire population to fluoride’s adverse health effects.

As much as I hate to agree with the Birchers, fluoride is a drug. And since it’s put into the water, it’s mass medication without individual consent. It sounds outrageous; but that’s what it is.

And, no you can’t avoid your fluoridated tap water because the fluoride is inhaled in showers and absorbed in baths.

Besides, with about 70% of public water supplies now fluoridated, fluoride is in virtually all supermarket and restaurant foods. And there’s no dispute that too much fluoride can damage teeth and bones.

And the fluoride that’s added to water supplies is not pharmaceutical grade. It’s silicofluoride – impure waste products of phosphate fertilizer manufacturing – much of which is now imported from China, Japan and Mexico.

Please no tired Dr. Strangelove or dihydrogen oxide posts. They are so last century along with fluoridation.

great video remember Rachel loves Ron Paul and Ron paul loves the Birtchers. I think the left and the right are more alike than either one with the middle. The enemy of my enemy is my friend. The constutution is left and right because it leaves people alone to make their own choices. It is the middle’s agenda to pit one against the other to try to dominate and destroy the constitution. This little video shows some evidence of that.

Brillant rapor with Rachel by Mr. McManus and Mr. Jasper- you could tell Jack and Bill were winning when she shifted to ‘iodine and salt’!

You must never watch “the Factor” because if you did you would undoubtedly know they only “harangue” folks who will not respond to the programs questions about, more often than not, outrageous claims. Rachel Maddow made some pretty outrageous claims about the John Birch Society a few months back and did not allow the JBS to come on the show. John F. McManus even made mention of this during the exchange. I might have a little more respect for “Ms Maddow’s polite and respectful interview” if it had happened on her show shortly after she attacked the JBS.

[...] learned their names from a video segment of the conversation at the JBS Web site, which can be seen in its entirety [...]

That was interesting to see. I think Mrs. Maddow was being especialy nice hoping to bait the two gentlemen. Unfortunatly I think Mr. McManus appeared a bit ameture like when he asserted himself into the conversation. I think Mr. McManus was unprepared to have a liberal star such as mrs. Maddow approach the booth and it showed. They would do well to have a game plan in the future. Then they could bring the president of our organization forward more graciously and he could have a series of controversial questions or comments desighned to extend the conversation and thereby his media exposure. Ofcourse there is always the highly unlikely prospect that he could open Mrs. Maddow’s eyes to her own errors. In susbstance they had the high ground.

  9. Sally O'Boyle Says:

Rachel proved to me once again that she can be immensely obtuse. She doesn’t get the difference between being able to buy iodized or non-iodized salt by choice, and having your home’s water – which we pay for – medicated?

Would she get it if all salt were iodized?

Here in Costa Rica, all flour has iron added. All salt has iodine added as well as fluoride (yes, fluoride in the salt). You cannot buy either without the additive. Thankfully, the water is not fluoridated because they can’t afford it.

nyscof: it doesn’t sound outrageous. Mass medication without individual consent is exactly what it is. Last time I checked, 19 countries so far have banned fluoride from their water supply. A few of them because it is “mass medication without consent.” And we live in the land of the free.

I have watched and enjoyed Rachel’s show. Her haranguing of Obama re. indefinite detention was priceless, as is her admiration (for the most part) of Ron Paul. If she just hangs in there, she might get it. Wonder if she’s read the Constitution or watched Badnarik’s Constitution class on youtube.
